Sometimes referred to as Li Galli or Les Gallos, this archipelago of three islands is a must-see when visiting Positano by superyacht.
Set adrift from the picture-perfect town of Positano, La Sirenuses are scattered in the Mediterranean sea like jewels. A must-visit on an Amalfi Coast yacht charter, the archipelago gets its name from being the mythical setting of sirens, who enticed sailors onto the rocks with their sweet songs.
The three major islands of the chain are Gallo Lungo, Castelluccio, and Rotonda, however, the Sirenuses are often grouped together with nearby Isca and rocky islet Vetara.
As early as the 1st century BC, several sirens were said to have inhabited the islands, the most famous of whom were Parthenope, Leucosia, and Ligeia. One of them played the lyre, another sang, and another played the flute, and their melodies drew sailors and ships to the rocks, where they would inevitably wreck.
During the reign of Charles II of Naples in the late 13th century, the largest island, Galla Lungo, hosted a monastery and a prison, with a watchtower to deter unwanted visitors. Across several years, the island chain was sold a number of times before Russian choreographer and dancer Leonide Massine bought them in 1922. He made it into a private residence, complete with a beach-facing villa, a huge terrace garden, a dance studio, and a theatre; the latter was unfortunately destroyed in a storm.

Most recently, the villa and island were purchased by a hotelier who uses it as both a private residence and a rental property.
Access to Gallo Lungo is prohibited, but visitors arriving by motor yacht can easily drop anchor and swim in these calm waters, where snorkellers may spot turtles, dolphins, and other exotic sea creatures.
Superyachts exploring West Coast Italy are a regular sighting around this string of islands, and it's all too easy to understand the appeal of these mythical rocky outposts.
