Discovered by two young boys playing cricket in the early 1900s, the Crystal Caves in Bermuda are a beguiling natural wonder that have since become one of the island’s most popular hotspots, and a must-see attraction on your Bermuda yacht charter.
Formed during the Ice Age, these dramatic cave systems underneath the Caribbean island of Bermuda are a spectacle to behold, where soaring stalagmites and icicles of shining white limestone stalactites hang suspended from the cavernous ceiling, reflected in the clear azure pools. Within these pools you’ll be able to witness more spectacular formations for truly breathtaking sights.
Access to the site is via a lush garden lined with royal palms, from where you will descend into the crystal caves. Meander the floating pontoons over the mirror-calm lakes that shimmer on the cave walls, as a guide regales all sorts of fascinating facts and historical insight into these natural phenomena of crystal formations in every shape and size.
The caves themselves have featured in a number of films, as well as providing creative inspiration for the likes of author Mark Twain and Fraggle Rock’s co-creator, Michael Frith, who imagined an underworld filled with strange and delightful creatures.
Naturally, as one of Bermuda’s popular tourist destinations, there is a gift shop and cafe, but the true gems are the crystal formations and incredible geological history that spans millions of years.
