Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
5 - 21 Aug 2016
The first Olympic Games in South America, the long-awaited 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will arrive in Rio next summer during August and September.
The Olympics will arrive in Brazil from 5 to 21 August, followed by the Paralympics from 7 to 18 September. Over 17 days, 206 medal events across 42 sports will be contested at the Olympic Games amongst 10,500 competitors from 206 countries.
The world’s most famous sporting event will be held at four venues - located at Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã - in Cidade Maravilhosa (the ‘Marvellous City’). The four main arenas range in distance from the coast from 4.6km to 51km away.
Due to the limited marina infrastructure in Rio, limited berthing is available at Pier Maua (Porto Maravilha) in Santo Cristo, with anchorage recommended further afield in Guanabara Bay.
