Situated 500m off Xrobb I-Ghagin on the east coast of Malta lies the fascinating World War II airplane wreck, extremely well preserved, this dive is definitely one to add to the bucket list when traveling around Mediterranean waters on your luxury superyacht.
Resting on the sea bed at 42 meters below water level, the wreck of the WWII British aircraft is truly one of a kind.
Swarmed with wildlife and still in a good state of preservation, plane wrecks like this are very rare. Guests on a superyacht charter vacation can enjoy a dive down to see the remains of this plane which has been sitting on the sandbanks since 1941.
There is nothing more fascinating than seeing a piece of history that was meant to be up in the air, now resting on the seabed.
The wreck is still remarkably unbroken with the engine, rear landing wheel and wings all still intact. Amazingly, even the tire is still inflated with air. The rear of the fuselage was separated from the plane on impact with the water and now lies just a few meters away from the main wreckage.
Don’t miss the stunning marine creatures that have made this wreck their home, an array of flora and fauna including beautiful sponges, tube worms, crabs, lobsters and octopus glide around the wreck regularly. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of some moray eels and sea turtles that also visit the wreck site.
It is important to note that guests on a superyacht charter are advised to be at an experienced diving level to see the wreck, this is due to the strong currents and the depth and conditions of the plane.
Malta is consistently voted one of the best diving destinations in the world and it is easy to see why, with such a fantastically favorable climate and an astonishing array of underwater sites, divers flock to the Maltese Islands from far and wide to explore its crystal clear waters.
