A new entrant to the competition, the 34m/111ft sailing yacht KAWIL took home the gold at the NZ Millennium Cup.
Held between 29 January - 1 February, the 2020 NZ Millennium Cup saw a fleet of five sailing yachts take on a challenging course around the Bay of Islands off the southern coast of New Zealand.
After three days of racing it was KAWIL which came out on top, followed closely by the largest yacht in the fleet; 55m/179ft sailing yacht ADELE.
Other participants in the race included 34m/110ft charter yacht SILVERTIP and Royal Huisman’s 34m/112ft sailing yacht SASSAFRAS. The pair enjoyed a well-timed start to the races on the final day, with plenty of sharp turns and well-executed maneuvers to keep onlookers entertained.
The winner of the 2017 edition, the 39.7m/130.5ft superyacht ‘Janice of Wyoming’ was also participating in the races this year, but incurred a penalty on the final day for sailing too close to, and subsequently crossing, the starting line.
The prize-giving ceremony saw the crew of KAWIL take home first place. They are expected to be returning to the Bay of Islands for next year’s regatta, which is due to take place between February 15-18 2021. They will be joined by Sassafras, Janice of Wyoming, Silvertip and last year’s winner Tawera.
