Fabulous Finland: adventure-filled charters on board luxury yacht XUMI

By Nina Done   24 June 2022

For a unique luxury yacht vacation off the beaten track, explore the captivating beauty of southern Finland, which nature has blessed with an abundance of wildlife, fjord-like waters and the largest archipelago in the world.

Finland yacht charters on board the sporty 26m (84ft) motor yacht XUMI are perfect for those looking for adventure-filled experiences, which can include exclusive game hunting and fishing packages, Finnish sauna experiences, private island dining and wreck diving, to name but a few of the pursuits on offer around this spectacular region.

Superyacht XUMI

Delivered in 2008 by the esteemed Italian yard Maiora Yachts, luxury yacht XUMI embodies the perfect retreat, offering a luxurious sanctuary in which to explore your breathtaking surroundings, and is currently the largest to be available for luxury yacht charters in Finnish waters.

YachtCharterFleet recently had the pleasure of being hosted on board, where XUMI's impressive features were showcased to perfection in the land of the midnight sun, against a backdrop of pine and spruce-clad islands and rock strewn landscape that make up Finland's beautiful southern archipelago region.

Stunning contemporary interiors

Xumi’s spacious, light-filled interiors are the master stroke of Maiora Yachts' in-house team, while her sleek exteriors are penned by the naval architect and designer Roberto Del Re.

Showcasing an elegant scheme of creams and taupes with natural elm paneling and walnut parquet floors, her interiors are at once warm and inviting with soft rugs, plush furnishings and contemporary artwork adding to her overall chic and laid-back vibe.

Her expansive saloon offers guests a haven in which to kick back and relax, equipped with a flat screen television and integrated Bose audio system, which also runs to the deck areas. This open plan saloon adjoins a dining area offering the perfect setting for more formal meals or cooler evenings.

A partitioned door neatly demarcates the guest area from the helm station, located forward of the galley. Here, there is a comfortable leather banquette where guests can gaze at the scenery as the captain expertly navigates XUMI towards her next destination.

As well as offering the ideal platform for a Finland yacht charter, she also boasts an impressive maximum speed of 28 knots and comfortable cruising speed of 24 knots, coupled with her deep V hull for stability and shallow draft, perfect for zipping between the islands.

Alfresco socialising

Yacht XUMI’s flybridge presents the ideal retreat for socializing and relaxation, with opportunities to soak up the sun on an inviting spread of plush sun pads when the yacht is moored off one of the many beautiful islands around this spectacular region.

This deck also provides an alfresco dining option, coupled with an adjacent barbecue station at which the yacht chef can work his magic, while guests enjoy a cocktail or two as they take in their beautiful surroundings.

On the flybridge aft there is storage for the onboard tender, which conveniently keeps the rest of the decks clear for socializing and entertaining.

On her main deck aft, there is an additional partly shaded dining area for guests, offering a great place to enjoy your early morning coffee as you relax and watch the world go by.

Alfresco breakfasts here are a real highlight, involving a veritable feast of hams, cheeses, fresh juices, yogurts and variety of breads, all of which are beautifully presented buffet-style by the stewardess, with hot food orders produced in the galley and served to the table.

Heading down the steps from here, you’ll find an extended swim platform providing the perfect base for swimming as well as jumping on yacht XUMI’s array of water toys and accessories, including a raft of paddle boards and kayaks, perfect for exploring Finland's myriad secret island sanctuaries and hidden coves.

Spacious accommodation

Private charter yacht XUMI comfortably sleeps up to 8-10 guests in her four beautifully-appointed cabins featuring exquisite Balmuir bed linens and toiletries, and plush carpeting throughout; comprising a generous full-beam master stateroom, featuring a walk-in-wardrobe and his and her en suites, as well as a full-beam VIP cabin opposite.

These principle cabins are separated by two port and starboard twin cabins with Pullman berths, providing fantastic flexibility for a variety of yacht charter configurations.

Each cabin also comes equipped with full entertainment systems, Samsung television screens and en-suite bathroom facilities, with good integrated storage options.

Dedicated and professional crew

Captain Tom has 45 years of experience helming yachts, and comes with extensive knowledge of the shallow and rocky terrain around the Finnish archipelago, including all the best places to visit to ensure the optimum yacht charter experience for your and your guests.

Add to this XUMI’s talented chef Jussi, who has 17 years of experience under his belt, including time spent honing his culinary skills under the Michelin star chef at Chez Dominique in Helsinki, where he developed his fusion style of cookery using classic French and Finnish cuisine. Naturally, chef Jussi will ensure each meal is perfectly tailored around your individual preferences.

The stewardesses on board rotate their roles and all come from 6-star service backgrounds, providing the highest level of service at all times to rival the largest and most expensive superyachts on offer.

Superyacht XUMI's dedicated crew are all Finnish with perfect spoken English who are keen to create the best possible yacht charter experience for you and your guests.

Unique itineraries on a Finland yacht charter

There are countless picture-perfect islands to discover around this beautiful stretch of coastline, with opportunities to undertake a number of unique experiences. Whether you have always wanted to stalk big game, enjoy bird watching or diving immaculately preserved wrecks, yacht charters on board superyacht XUMI are sure to please even the most discerning guest.

We've listed below some of our top destination picks to help provide inspiration for your next Finland yacht charter.

Helsinki

Finland’s capital offers an enticing blend of laid-back charm, uber trendy districts and veritable medley of cultural delights, making Helsinki the ideal place to kick off your yacht charter.

Occupying Finland’s southernmost peninsula in the Baltic Sea, Helsinki is a truly diverse city, home to an eclectic array of architecture, beautiful stretches of park land and beaches and upscale fine dining, with something to marvel at around every corner.

The city is eminently walkable, although there are plenty of transport options to whisk you from place to place, including a highly efficient tram system. There are also bikes for hire allowing you to explore the city with ease.

We recommend taking the coastal route which circles Helsinki’s oldest park, Kaivopuisto. Here, you’ll find charming seaside cafes on your way, perfect for refueling stops, and some of the most beautiful Art Nouveau architecture in the city.

For something a little more unique, head south to Löyly, an urban oasis home to three wood-heated saunas carved from black concrete, Scandinavian birch and blackened steel for the ultimate Finnish sauna experience. Afterwards, head up to the terrace to enjoy uninterrupted sea views as you tuck into the restaurant’s excellent cuisine with dishes paying homage to traditional Scandinavian fare with a Mediterranean twist.

On your way out of the marina, you’ll also be able to spot the Suomenlinna, a strategic military sea fortress and UNESCO Heritage Site stretching across numerous islands and comprising 6 kms of defensive walls that can be seen for miles.

Barösund

Set within a narrow fjord-like passage with mirror-calm waters against a backdrop of pine forests and charming vermillion wooden homes, this idyllic island is truly magical and the perfect place to park the yacht for the night. Here, guests can choose to explore the village and surrounding forests, or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful tranquility coupled with glorious views from the yacht.

To cap it off, this tiny hamlet boasts a delightful restaurant that offers a tempting seasonal menu inspired by true Finnish cuisine using only fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

The menu provides a good variety of meat and vegan options, with an array of delicious dishes on offer ranging from a Finnish malt loaf with horseradish hummus starter to a braised cod main served with a beurre blanc sauce, spring greens and new potatoes.

Named Skola after the old school house in which the restaurant is set, patrons come from far and wide to enjoy the food, convivial atmosphere and stunning backdrop.

The restaurant gets busy in the summer, with locals coming over from the mainland on the island’s ferry service that runs approximately every 15 mins, so it is well worth booking ahead during the peak season.

Hanko

Located on a narrow peninsula on the southernmost point in Finland, the charming port town of Hanko is Finland's answer to the Hamptons, playing host to the country’s wealthy elites throughout the peak summer months, who all come to enjoy the beautiful setting and vibrant atmosphere.

Hanko Marina is the beating heart of the town, where you’ll find an array of bars, clubs and restaurants, including the excellent Makasiini Restaurant for a taste of true Scandinavian cuisine at its finest. Also in the marina is the Yacht Club, boasting a sunset rooftop terrace that is the place to be in the summer months, where patrons come to enjoy sundowners as they soak up beautiful views across the archipelago.

For those keen to continue their revelries into the night, the beach-inspired club Coco Hanko is the perfect after hours outdoor venue, where you can soak up the atmosphere in style as you celebrate with your charter party.

To experience Hanko with all your senses we recommend a bike tour, with cycle hire available in a number of locations, including at the marina. A popular activity for locals and tourists alike, you and your guests will be free to explore the town with ease. Catch glimpses of the grand Victorian villas that would not look out of place in Newport, Rhode Island as you cycle along the tranquil sandy paths that wind through the pine forests parallel to the sea.

There are also private sauna facilities found on small rock skerries just outside the harbor, where guests can partake in the hugely popular Finnish practice of a sauna followed by a refreshing dip in the cool waters. With its renowned health benefits and spectacular backdrop this might just be one of the highlights of your trip, leaving you feeling utterly relaxed and at one with nature.

For scuba lovers, the brackish, low salt waters outside Hanko yield a bounty of perfectly preserved shipwrecks to explore, which includes a number of traditional old schooners. Diving can also be conveniently enjoyed straight from the back of the yacht, leaving you free to discover for yourselves these wooden treasures of the deep.

Back on shore, you’ll find vast stretches of pastel-colored sand beaches which play host to a number of activities during the summer, including regattas, volleyball and picnics. There is also an outdoor concert area that hosts numerous live events throughout June and July. Speak to your yacht broker for more information of what's on during your visit.

Private island dining experience

For a unique dining experience, your charter broker can arrange for you and your guests to dine on your very own private island.

Our private dining experience was set on the picturesque island of Torrharyn, where local couple Gunilla and Niklas Nordblad open their beautiful wooden home every summer to visitors, who come from all over to feast on extraordinarily good meals produced using zero electricity. Instead, the freshly-caught fish is cooked using a traditional Finnish elder smoker, giving a rich depth of flavor that has to be tasted to be believed.

The outdoor dining area is set on a wooden terrace that overlooks the scenic archipelago amid a backdrop of stately pines. These offer up dappled shade while the plateau of moonscape-like boulders add to the island’s otherworldly charm, for a truly magical setting.

The table is beautifully arranged by Gunilla with local flowers adorning the center, offering a tranquil and intimate setting for you and your guests to bask in the island’s serenity. The menu is simple yet delicious, with most ingredients sourced locally, either from their own kitchen garden or from neighboring islands.

We enjoyed a course of traditional wood-smoked salmon, new potatoes and asparagus with a foraged herb and dill dressing, with dessert comprising a white chocolate rhubarb fool perched atop a layer of heavenly oat crumble.

The couple are keen for visitors to experience Finland at its finest, and their warm hospitality coupled with melodious bird song, gently lapping waters, pine-scented air and traditional Finnish cuisine ensures visitors keep coming back year after year.

If you're keen to incorporate a private dining experience into your Finland yacht vacation, please speak with your charter broker beforehand who will be able to arrange it for you.

Hunting and fishing packages

Situated in the boreal coniferous forest zone, Finland enjoys unique indiginous wildlife, with some of the best big game hunting in Europe, coupled with fairly relaxed regulations and businesses set up solely for this practice, making it easy to incorporate an exclusive afternoon of stalking moose, bear or deer into your yacht charter itinerary. Obviously, if stalking big game isn’t your thing, you can opt for duck hunting, fishing or even clay pigeon shooting off the back of the yacht.

Finland’s landscape naturally lends itself to wildlife, made up of ice-age hewn islands, skerries and rocks, as well as vast forests and myriad lakes, which explains its moniker, “land of a thousand lakes”. You can legally hunt or fish almost 100 species of native game, with hunters enjoying a near-free range, either on public or private land and waters.

Guides

You’ll need a professional guide to help organize permits and arrange an event that suits you and your charter party. Companies such as Wildmark have decades of experience under their belts, and generally enjoy a high success rate, and will endeavour to provide you with the best experience possible.

In the summer, events can be organized from Finland’s southern capital of Helsinki, Hanko or directly from the yacht’s anchorage - whichever works for you. The companies tend to be flexible around the needs of the clients, while still being mindful of the migratory patterns of the relevant fauna. For instance, duck hunting is available from August, while seal hunting can be undertaken from April to the end of the year. And the best time to hunt moose, roe and white tail (deer) tends to be in October, either stalking or from behind ‘blinds’.

Please note that hunting packages can also be combined to include fishing and can incorporate a unique lunch experience on a secluded island, where you and your guests can enjoy the sound of birdsong and lapping waves as the chef prepares your catch over a fire pit for a magical dining experience non pareil.

Please note that due to permits, capped numbers and limited seasons, you will need to book any hunting at least a year in advance for this highly exclusive off-menu activity.
