Following the announcement last year to remove the matriculation tax on luxury charter yachts cruising in Spain and an easier process now in place for obtaining a Charter Licence, there is now an increasing number of high quality superyachts available for vacations in the region.
Last October a proposed law to remove the matriculation tax on luxury charter yachts in Spain was approved by the Treasury Commission of the Spanish Congress, potentially creating a huge boost for the region’s tourism sector. The tax had been introduced several years ago and made chartering a superyacht within the Mediterranean waters of Spain and the Balearics was not only expensive but also complicated.
Yachts for charter in Spain also need to acquire a Spanish Charter License which in itself was a lengthy process and combined with the tax expenses meant that few superyachts over 35m/115ft were available for vacations in the area. Luxury yachts without charter licenses would need to embark and disembark outside of Spanish, making it difficult for clients to enjoy short charters or avoid hefty fuel costs.
With so much on offer in Spain, from the glamorous summer party crowd in Ibiza and the Balearic Islands to the cultural and architectural beauty of Barcelona, there is certainly demand for a prosperous charter market there. The good news is that the licensing rules in Spain are now gradually relaxing and as a result there are a growing number of options for charter clients looking to enjoy a summer vacation there.
Superyachts such as the 42m/137’ Baglietto motor yacht NATORI, the sleek 47m/155ft Sunseeker BLUSH and the impressive 40m/131ft sailing yacht PHILANDERER are now part of an ever expanding fleet available of vessels that now have Spanish Charter Licences. This growth in high-calibre luxury yachts marks a positive step forward for the Spanish tourism industry and the charter market, talk to your charter broker for further details.
