Racing goes ahead in Porto Cervo at Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2018

By Rebecca Bradbury   11 June 2018

Racing at the 2018 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, held in Porto Cervo from 6 to 9 June, finally got underway on the final two days of the competition after unfavourable weather conditions put a stop to proceedings on days one and two.

Three races held over two days saw the 40m/130ft sailing yacht ‘My Song’ from Baltic Yachts secure a hat-trick of wins to triumph in class A, while the 27m/89ft sailing yacht SAVANNAH similarly notched up three victories to come out on top in class B in her event debut.

The first two races were held on 8 June, with the morning course covering 15 miles and the afternoon offering reduced to 17 miles due to a drop in the wind caused by storms in-land.

A common theme at this year’s regatta, the lack of wind caused racing to be cancelled on the first two days of racing. But, sunshine and mistral wind on day four ensured the final race went ahead.

Starting at Porto Cervo, the 31-mile course circumnavigated the beautiful islands of the La Maddalena archipelago. Unfortunately, there was a reduced fleet as three competitors had to withdraw due to on-board technical reasons, leaving five remaining yachts.

My Song was the only competitor to remain in class A. Yet, in class B, SAVANNAH had to fight off fierce competition from the 46m/151ft charter yacht GANESA from Vitters.

We had very good breeze today, very good conditions, flat seas and it was really very impressive to see all the other boats catching up with us

Fellow charter yacht, the 50m/163ft sailing yacht OHANA, ranked in fourth place behind the 37m/123ft sailing yacht ESCAPADE from Fitzroy.

After day four of racing, SAVANNAH’s owner, Huge Morrison, commented: “It’s great to win, it’s a wonderful regatta and the best location in the world. We had very good breeze today, very good conditions, flat seas and it was really very impressive to see all the other boats catching up with us.”

The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta presents a brilliant opportunity to undertake a regatta charter. Plus, teaming with gorgeous scenery, five-star cuisine, designer boutiques and idyllic Sardinian coatline on its doorstep, Porto Cervo is a brilliant destination for an extended Mediterranean yacht charter.
