The recent anti-government demonstrations and civil unrest in Turkey have raised concerns with travellers planning luxury charter vacations there this summer. However, as with the ongoing issues in Greece over the past couple of years that have seen its tourism industry struggle to recover, much of the problem is down to media hype portraying an amplified version of the real story and causing unnecessary panic.
On Wednesday 12th June the Foreign Office advised against essential travel to certain parts of the country, recommending that travellers ‘should avoid all demonstrations and leave the area if one develops’. Travel experts and luxury yacht industry professionals are advising charter clients that the issues are isolated to certain big city areas that are no-where near the cruising grounds. There are a few areas inland in the east and south east of Turkey that travellers are urged to avoid, particularly on the Syrian border, but these are not places that effect charter vacations.
As with the unrest in Greece, the general consensus is that coastal areas remain peaceful and serene and that arranged demonstration areas such as Istanbul and Ankara should be avoided. Turkey has long been considered as one of the East Mediterranean’s best charter destinations, offering a fusion of breath-taking beaches, picture-perfect islands and fascinating history and culture. Packed full of hidden coves and lapped by warm turquoise waters, Turkey’s southern coastline, known as the Turquoise Coast is home to some of the East Mediterranean’s most luxurious resorts whilst the beautiful Gulf of Gocek offers some of the best sailing in the region.
