The islands of Raja Ampat are steeped in myth and legend, their name deriving from an old tale about a local woman who finds seven eggs, four of which hatch to become the Four Kings that occupied the regions four main islands of Salawati, Batanta, Waigeo and Misool.

Once a part of the influential Tidore Kingdom from Maluku, Raja Ampat is situated off the northwest tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea in Indonesia’s West Papua province. The region encompasses more than 40,000 km² of land and sea with more than 1500 islands, islets and cays surrounded by turquoise blue waters.

Raja Ampat boasts the most bio-diverse marine eco-system in the world, something that is strongly influenced by its position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This of course makes it perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling amongst the 550 species of corals and 1,200 species of fish.

This Indonesian utopia is just as impressive on land. Known as ‘the last paradise on earth’, its jungle terrains contrasting with endless stretches of pristine beaches and jagged limestone cliffs that plunge into the ocean.
