Located on the small island, Wayag, this lagoon’s clear blue waters are a tropical haven that you won’t want to miss when chartering in the Raja Ampat archipelago.
Surrounded by several karst hills typical of the Raja Ampat region, Wayag Lagoon offers the more adventurous guests in your charter party a thrilling opportunity to go climbing in search of breathtaking views.
There are 2 main hiking trails, with the most famous being the hike up Mount Pindito. This trail was originally pioneered by well-known explorer, Edi Frommenwiler and is an impressive 2500-foot-high climb. Starting from the white sands of a pristine beach surrounded by hard corals, fuel up on your favourite snacks while before venturing into the kart hill’s jungle.
Given the absence of a trail path and the hill’s rocky terrain, this hiking route is a difficult one, so it is better suited for those more experienced hikers in your party. Indeed, the final 165 feet to the hill’s peak are reachable only by rock climbing; there are plenty of hand and foot holds so not technically challenging, but you’ve got to be a fairly confident climber, and unfazed by heights of course!
The other popular hiking trail is the ‘Wayag lagoon hike’, which is perhaps a slightly easier choice thanks to the hill’s smaller height. Located further into the lagoon on a mushroom-shaped island, there is no beach on this hike that you can use as a landing spot. It requires mainly rock climbing, but it has lots of hand and foot holds so is not especially difficult.
From both peaks, you can expect 360-degree views of the region’s blue waters and lush green islets. Once at the top, be sure to look out for friendly sharks and schools of brightly-colored fish in the lagoon’s shallow waters.
After a morning of climbing, cool off by jumping into the turquoise blue waters of the Wayag Lagoon. We recommend diving from Eagle Rock, a dive site named after the eagles that circle the Raja Ampat’s rocky islands.
Make sure to that your luxury charter yacht has snorkeling and diving gear as the lagoon’s waters are replete with a myriad of sea creatures including (but certainly not limited to) sweetlips, barracudas, bump head parrotfish, and reef and wobbegong sharks.
Given the lagoon’s expansive size, it’s also the perfect place to use other water toys like kayaks and paddle boards.
