Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune's Grotto)

Named after the God of the Sea, Neptune’s Caves were formed around two million years ago and discovered by fishermen in the 18th Century. They can be found around 24 km from the Sardinian town of Alghero in the marine protected area of Capo Caccia-Isola Piana inside Porto Conte Park.

The best way to get to the caves is by sea, otherwise, a vertiginous 654-step descent down the "Escala del Cabirol' ("Billy Goat Stairs’) is the only way to reach them on land. The visitors' tour through the caves travels in for around 1 km, leading through a column-lined entrance to the clear salty waters of Lake La Marmora - 100m long 9m deep and with its own sandy beach.

 Other rooms include the majestic Palace Room complete with stalagmite-formed arches and overlooked by the Music Room balcony and the beautiful Room of Ruins and Organ Room.
