Located in the beautiful Malmö, the former fortress is a part of Malmö museums and hosts the Malmö art museum and the natural history museum of Malmö.
Built from 1537 to 1542 in the ruins of an old fort, the Malmö castle is the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in Scandanavia and often brings in history enthusiasts who are eager to learn more about Sweden's past.
Historically, this fortress was one of the most important strongholds of Denmark. Founded in 1434 by King Eric of Pomerania, the structure was then demolished in the early 16th century before the castle acquired its present appearance following major reconstruction in the 1530s. This is when King Christian III ordered the building of a modern fortress, splendid Renaissance castle and county governor´s residence, all on one site.
A very interesting part of Scandinavian history.
The Malmö castle is also where Denmark's coins were minted in the Middle Ages and where prisoners were kept between 1568-1573.
Today, the castle is an extraordinary place to visit where guests can immerse themselves in the deep-rooted history of the area.
