A beautiful and tranquil site that needs to be seen, the Mu Ko Chang National Park is located in the Golf of Thailand offshore from the coast of Trat Province.
Covering an area of 213km² Ko Chang is characterised by its vast rainforests, sweeping bays and coral reefs. It was designated a Marine National Park in 1982 and has enjoyed a quiet life away from the main thrust of tourists that began flocking to Thailand in the latter half of the last century.
Due to its protected status, remote location and dense jungle covering, Ko Chang - Thailand’s 3rd largest island – has remained relatively untouched and, although it has become increasingly popular in the last decade or so, it still retains its remote and rugged character.
The island is renowned for its spectacular waterfalls, with some of the most beautiful located higher amidst the dense jungle, including Klong Plu Waterfall. Ko Chang also boasts myriad stretches of glorious platinum sand beaches lapped by intensely turquoise waters, all of which have seen the island's emergence as a major tourist destination in recent years.
Due to its headland being shaped a little like this herbivorous mammal, it is affectionaly known as Elephant Island, which is also rather apt as there are indeed elephants on this island, which you can even bathe with if you so wish at Ban Kwan Chong!
Visitors can also enjoy trekking, kayaking, snorkeling and diving among the vibrant coral reefs found in abundance throughout the park.
The National Park is located in the Gulf of Thailand, where you'll find a variety of yachts to choose from throughout the year, although the best time of year to experience the park is during the cold season from November to March.
Temperatures during this period average around 27-30 degrees, with almost guaranteed sunshine and calm waters, perfect for luxury yacht charters around this beautiful region.
