Located in Mill Valley, just a short ride inland from San Francisco, Muir Woods is a destination not to be missed on a USA yacht charter along the west coast.
Characterised by its beautiful cathedral of ancient redwoods that stretch high into a canopy of leaves above, with ages ranging from 400 to 800 years, these majestic trees have been accorded with the highest protection and are now part of the Muir Woods National Monument. This was established in 1908 when President Roosevelt signed legislation to protect the old-growth redwood forest from destruction.
In addition to the stately redwoods, visitors with a keen eye will spot California big leaf maples, tanoaks and Douglas firs among the plethora of trees, shrubs and flora in this stunning national park. The forest floor also yields a veritable bounty, covered in redwood sorrel, ferns and myriad species of funghi.
There is also a rushing river which flows through the park year-round, upon which crosses several bridges. For wildlife lovers, there are also opportunities to spot endangered coho salmon fingerlings, Pacific wren, woodpeckers, owls, deer, chipmunks, skunks, river otters and squirrels to name a few.
Boasting a rich and varied history, visitors will get the chance to discover more about this primeval forest and its early inhabitants by the Coast Miwok people right through to its present day preservation efforts. There is also a gift shop and cafe, including a selection of outdoor dining areas.
It’s worth noting that there is no cell coverage around Muir Woods National Monument.
Muir Woods National Monument is part of California’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area, north of San Francisco.
