Guide to Alonissos

One of the jewels of Alonissos is the Chora. The ancient town is perched atop a hill with stunning panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Quaint whitewashed buildings with blue shutters dot the hillside, enticing you to explore the narrow cobbled streets and admire the traditional architecture. The main settlement of the island is now Patitiri. This is the ideal point from which to sail out and spend time in the National Marine Park, the largest protected marine area in Europe and home to the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal. The marine park also protects rare seabirds and dolphins, as well as boasting an impressive variety of fish and coral. A number of small islets, as well as Alonissos, comprise the marine park and these are all open to visitors. The only closed area is the island of Piperi, which hosts the delicate ecosystem and limestone caves where the seals live. Be aware you’re not allowed to enter the three nautical mile zone surrounding it.

Or visit the secluded cove of Leftos Gialos, with its wild herbs and lavender growing amongst the neighbouring olive trees. 

The primary marina on Alonissos is in the island’s main town of Patitiri, and can host large vessels with a max length of 60m. The marina has basic amenities but is situated a mere stone’s throw to the town itself, so restaurants and other conveniences are within easy reach.
