A statue of Ivan Crnojević, from the dynasty that ruled the medieval state of Zeta, with his sword on his shoulder looking up to the skies with pride stands in Cetinje. Savina is widely considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the Adriatic. The medieval monastery features a stunning iconostasis, which extends around the ancient cemetry to a lively fountain full of fresh water.
There are three churches here in total, dating back to the 11th Century, each one offers something unique as well as an array of impressive relics. The monastery is never overcrowded with visitors, and always has a unique, tranquil atmosphere.

Sampling the wine of Montenegrin grapes, is quite a rare experience around the world. The country was producing wine long before France and Italy but produces small quantities in its cooler altitudes.
The city of Bar, Adriatic lies straight across the Adriatic sea from Bari, Puglia in Italy, both areas are renown for producing a robust red Primitivo (Zinfandel). The country produces a tiny but delicious amount of Vranac, its most important grape to make it, but those who are lucky enough to try it enjoy a intense flavour with a rich colour. After a few years, benefitting from the use of oak, Montenegrin Vranac has a taste to rival the best, strongest wines from the south of France. Its unique flavour can have a fresh acid balance, not common in wines across the water in Italy.
Since 1963, Montenegro has also been supplying the highly popular beverage of grape brandy Plantaže, making 17 million bottles anually. Made at one of the Europe's largest vineyard and with an exquisite taste, Plantaže is another must try for your visit.
The history of Old Town Budva is somewhat mystery, with fact and folklore getting intriguely intertwined over the years. Some say town used to be an island that attached itself to the shore, some say the town was discovered by a Greek sailor... what is clear is a strong Roman influence throughout its ancient, Venetian buildings which tell an enchanting tale of a past era.

Our Lady of Health Church was built as a votive church in the 15th C after numerous plague epidemics. It can be found halfway up the beautiful St. John's Mountain, where from here, visitors can experience views of the city of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor. The more keen walkers, can follow the wall that snakes up the hill and 1350 steps later arrive at the St. John's fortress on the hilltop.

The Bay of Kotor is often described as the fjord furthest southin Europe, but it is actually a ria, a submerged river valley. This stunning mosaic of Saint Marija Magdalena in Budva is just one of many mosaics found adorning the ancient walls of Montenegrin churches. Lovingly created several years ago, this one has been excellently maintained by locals.
Perhaps one of the most famous mosaics in Montenegro, greets you above the entrance to the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Budva. The mosaic depicts the three angels who visited Abraham and Sara in the Old Testament delivering the promise of a special child. It bears a strong resemblence to similar paintings from medieval Russia, particularly Reverend Andrey Rublyov of Radonezh.
High above the town of Kotor are some of the best vantage points across the bay – the ancient city walls. The walls date back to medieval times, built to protect Kotor from invaders. They developed over the years under various rulers, from the Byzantines to the Venetians, until they formed a full loop in the hillside until 15th C. There’s a combination of ramparts, gates, churches, forts and bastions built along them, and despite time, invasion and earthquakes over the years they’re still unbelievably well-preserved.
In the day their grey stone blends in with the muted green of the mountains behind and it can be hard to see their outline. But at night they are lit up to offer a spectacular view, with the light reflecting over the calm water of the bay – the walls almost appear to form a circle. A real must-see if you find yourself in Kotor in the evening.
The quaint town of Kotor has a small, but charming harbor. Smaller yachts can dock at the pier where as larger boats will anchor in the bay enclosed by hills. Visitors come ashore by tender boat a few minutes away from the old town. The Port of Kotor's official website diligently notes each cruise ship to visit the port daily along with some interesting facts about each vessel.
Surrounding the port, Kotor offers a variety of restaurants and bars to enjoy in the evening. Kotor nightlife is vibrant, with the hum of music usually travelling through each of the town's tiny alleys. Squares are usually bustling with well-dressed revellers enjoying beer and cocktails - enjoy!
Found on the top of a Mount Lovćen is the unique historical landmark of the Summit of the Kings. Nearby up Lovćen's serpentine road uphill from Kotor, you will find the birthplace of the royal family of Petrović and the mausoleum of the famous Montenegrin patriot Petar II Njegos.
Lovćen national park, located in the southwest of the country, is full of natural beauty and boasts over a thousand wonderful plant species. There are many ancient buildings scattered around the park, including the old homes and the village 'guva' and cottages in 'katuns' of settlements of cattlebreeders.
Mount Lovćen stands tall and majestic on the borders of the Adriatic and closes the lond, twisting bays of the Bay of Kotor. The mountain is characteristically Montenegrin, it's rocky slopes with several fissures, pits and deep depressions.
