2013 World Superyacht Awards

By Louise Marsh   7 May 2013

The annual World Superyacht Awards took place on Saturday in Istanbul where the elite of the superyacht industry congregated to discover who would be crowned the winners.

Taking place in the stunning grounds of the Çırağan Palace Kempinski, the most anticipated evening in yachting was attended by superyacht owners, their families and guests, as well as the top industry experts, all keen to witness the unveiling of the eighth WSA winners. Presided over by former BBC presenter Natasha Kaplinski the coveted silver Neptune awards identify the top sail and motor yachts that were delivered in 2012.

Many charter yachts took away a myriad of prizes on Saturday, including:

Mogambo, who won 'Displacement Motor Yacht – 1,300GT and above'. Sponsored by RMK Marine, the 73.51 Nobiskrug motor yacht stood out for her design detail, appearance, decoration and layout. Her naval architecture came from the shipyard while Reymond Langton Design was responsible for both her exterior and interior design.

Koji was recognised with a 'Judges’ commendation for performance and design' in the category of Two-deck semi-displacement yachts. The 34.1 metre Leopard yacht was awarded the commendation for her impressive performance and design. Koji's naval architecture is by Carlevaris & Partners in colaboration with the shipyard, her exterior styling by Bacigalupo and her interior by Luxury Projects.

Rainbow won the award for 'Sailing yacht in 39m+ size range' and was sponsored by D-Marin Marinas Group. Built for an exeperienced yachtsman, the 39.95m J-Class sailing yacht was built by Holland Jachtbouw to have similar lines to the yacht of the same name that beat Endeavour in the 1934 America’s Cup. She is a shallow yacht with a low internal volume which really tested her designers, Dykstra Naval Architects on exterior styling, naval architecture and interior design. Nonetheless, they created a beautiful yacht with an efficient deck layout and wonderful accommodation for all on board.

Faith, previously named Cakewalk and Fortunato, was awarded best 'Refitted motor yacht'. Placed into refit at Compositeworks in La Ciotat in France by her owner, the scope of work that was carried out was to an extremely high standard and included moving the swimming pool from the aft sundeck to the forward sundeck, completely removing the second deck level on the aft sundeck and updating the generator support frame in order to minimise noise in the owners cabin. Azure Naval Architects tackled the naval architecture during the refit, while Steve Howard consulting was in charge of the exterior styling and Chahan Interiors was responsible for the interior design.

Judges’ Commendation prizes were provided by Baccarat with the Alizée Sail trophy designed by Claus Harttung. 21 awards and judges’ commendations were awarded overall.
