In a move set to strengthen its position as a premier Mediterranean yacht charter destination, Montenegro has reinstated duty-free fuel for foreign private and commercial yachts. Previously discontinued in 2022, the policy officially came back into effect in early January 2025, aiming to revitalize the country’s nautical tourism sector.
The reintroduction of duty-free fuel is expected to provide significant cost savings for Montenegro yacht charter operators and yacht owners, making Montenegro a more attractive stopover for those navigating the Mediterranean.
Tony Browne, Marina Director at Porto Montenegro, highlighted the importance of the decision, stating, "Not only does it offer considerable cost savings, but it also positions Montenegro as the ultimate refueling hub in the Adriatic."
Several key ports in Montenegro will offer duty-free refueling services, including:
- Porto Montenegro in Tivat – Equipped to accommodate yachts of all sizes, including the largest superyachts.
- Marina Portonovi in the Bay of Kotor – Features 238 berths for yachts up to 90 meters in length.
- AD Marina Bar in the city of Bar – Provides over 1,000 berths for yachts up to 45 meters.
The regulation governing the implementation of the policy was published on the government's official website and took effect upon its inclusion in the Official Gazette. Further details regarding specific terms for private and commercial yachts are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
With this strategic move, Montenegro reaffirms its commitment to enhancing its maritime infrastructure and maintaining its reputation as a top-tier yachting hub in the Mediterranean. By offering economic incentives and world-class facilities, the country is poised to attract more luxury motor and sailing yacht charters, bolstering its tourism-driven economy.
In addition to the reinstated duty-free fuel policy, several new marina developments are underway in Montenegro to accommodate the growing demand from the yachting community. Among them is the Lustica Bay Marina, which will feature state-of-the-art facilities and over 200 berths, catering to both commercial and motor yacht charters.
Beyond its marinas, Montenegro yacht charter itineraries offer numerous attractions for charter guests including the stunning Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is a must-visit with its historic towns and breathtaking landscapes. The coastal town of Budva boasts pristine beaches and a vibrant nightlife, while Sveti Stefan, a picturesque islet turned luxury resort, provides an exclusive getaway. For nature enthusiasts, the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Cave near the Lustica Peninsula offer an unforgettable snorkeling and diving experience.
