Maldivian Island in the Shape of a Heart

17th March 2014

With untouched alabaster beaches, expanses of the bluest ocean and waters bursting with marine life, no one has ever needed an excuse to visit the Maldives.

Consisting of more than 1,000 islands to explore, this is a destination of the utmost beauty, open to visitors of almost every nationality thanks to its open tourist visa program. Spread over 700km approximately 670km west of Sri Lanka, the Maldives encompasses 26 coral atolls that accommodate around 1,200 islands, most of which are uninhabited.

Sheltered from monsoons by barrier reefs, the still warm waters are home to whale sharks that use the islands to stock up on food during their annual migration and can be found circling close to the surface. Manta rays also swim here, as do thousands of species of tropical fish, all of which add to the lively underwater scene which helped the Maldives to be voted as one of the top three places in the world to dive at the Diver and Sport Diver Awards.

When the sun goes down, there’s even more to see and explore. Watch the seabirds against the sunset before taking a trip to the world’s first underwater restaurant at Conrad Maldives or the underwater nightclub Subsix at the Niyama Resort.

Always a popular yacht charter detination, a recent announcement to change the law allowing superyachts to stay in the Maldives for 180 days (previously only 90 days) now makes it an even more tempting destination. Talk to your yacht charter broker to organise a luxury charter vacation to explore this exquisite region for yourself and see the full range of yachts currently available in the Maldives.
