There are three styles of structure on the island. You will more commonly find the cave houses, also called "yposkafa", which are usually carves into the rocky faces of the cliffs. 

The second category is referred to as "farmers' home" and is commonly found on the outskirts of coastal settlements. They are typically bungalow styled with a large courtyard and are even built with a canava (a winery).

In the centre of the villages, you will usually find modern, urban homes which tend to be multileveled and built relatively close together.

The ride of your life

The views from the cliff peaks of Santorini's coastal settlements are spectacular, however, the steep steps there are bound to exhaust you and your guests.

The crumbling remains of an ancient civilisation

One of the most interesting archaeological sites in all of Greece is located in Santorini. The Akrotiri is a well preserved bronze-age town buried under the ash from a volcanic eruption that happened over 3000 years ago.

Statue of Venera Milosskaya - the goddess of love
