Admire the Art that Decorates the St. Barts Landscape

You may notice a 6.5 foot bronze statue on your way to or from the islands small airport, and wonder what the man - mysteriously holding a spear and blowing a conch shell - represents. The Arawak spirit "Savaku" in fact is a representation of the very essence of the island.

The Arawak Indian is said to evoke the spirit of St. Barts and stand proud as a metaphor for the island, according to artist Guillaume Blanchard. Standing on a rock the shape of the islands, Savaku blows in a conch shell to signify the cry of nature as a reminder of the importance of the island's wildlife to its inhabitants. An iguana, at his feet, evokes the earth, wisdom and patience is accompanied by a pelican - the official symbol of the island and the island's sustenance as fisherman. A statue that invites contemplation, it is a significant representation of the importance of community on the island.
