Guide to Syros

Syros is one of the smallest of the 220 islands in the Cyclades, but its capital town of Hermoupolis (Ermoupoli) is one of the most impressive in the entire archipelago. The streets of this lively town are paved elegantly in white marble which runs seamlessly into the white marble neoclassical mansions that creep into the hills. The town’s Plateia Miaouli is one of the finest palm trimmed squares to be found in the Greek islands. Here you’ll find some great eateries, cafes and museums and a general sense that you are experiencing the ‘real’ Greece with all its rugged edges and unique personality.

If you walk for around an hour north into the hills (or you can drive if you’re feeling less active) from Ermoupoli you’ll discover the village of Ano Syros. It dates back to the 13th Century when it was built by the Venetian’s and now epitomises Old World Greece with its ambling streets and pastel coloured buildings with brightly coloured doors - well worth wondering around on a peaceful afternoon. The best beaches in Syros can be found on the southern coast and vary from golden sands to fine pebbles but all lapped by calm crystalline waters. One of the most popular sandy beaches is Galissas which is serviced by some bars and water sports facilities and is followed by the large sandy bay Finikas in terms of size. If you’re looking for somewhere more private try the sandy stretches of Ampela and Ahladi which both lack the facilities that attract tourist and as a result stay quiet and tranquil even in high season.
